To be a Christian is to accept this statement and all of its implications. There are no if's and's or but's about it. This is an exclusive statement, to be sure. There is ONLY one road to God, and that's through Jesus. It is the message of the entire Bible. Oh, there may be stories along the way that seem to be about something else, but they all, in some fashion, point us to this idea - we can't get to God on our own, through a religion, or by simply ignoring the whole thing. Our only hope is that God would save us, and He did - through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Ok. All that was said because there are those in our world, our government, our media, our education system, and our entertainment industry who are so completely ignorant of what the Bible actually teaches. With all that, some preachers have forsaken the Bible as well to gain these types as their following. Unfortunately, that's the tail wagging the dog.
The problem arises, however, when Christians do not correct these false ideas in the marketplace. In order to save face, job, or status, Christians stay silent. Standing for the truth silently is the same as giving the vocal majority the victory. Don't misunderstand me here. There's a time to be vocal, a time to take a stand, and a time to correct. Sometimes it's time to do all three publicly - regardless of who it is we are speaking to. (CAUTION: Be respectful, but be truthful.)
In the news this week, during a Senate confirmation hearing by the Budget Committee, Senator Bernie Sanders attacked President Trump's nominee for deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Russell Vought, a graduate of Wheaton College, a conservative, Christian college, for his belief that there is only one way to God, and it's Jesus Christ. You can read the article by USA Today here. Mr. Vought's answers were a solid stand for the teaching of Christ, but he offered NO correction to the misunderstandings of those attacking him. Letting this go allowed Mr. Sanders to effectively and with impunity violate the 1st Amendment of the Constitution as well as other parts that indicate that a religious test cannot be used in selecting those who serve. (This secular paper clearly sides with Mr. Sanders in this attack on Christian beliefs - and Christians - promoting it as the standard to follow in our nation from this day forward.)
If people are to know the truth, it is up to us - believers - to teach them. We can and we must do so with as much love as possible. Our neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, fellow-citizens all are in dire straits without Jesus. And we've been given the command by Christ to "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." ... Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)
If we do not, we allow the world to control us, effectively forcing us to disobey our Lord's command. That's the tail (the world) wagging the dog (the Believers), shaking us all around while we do nothing of value for our Lord.
