Most of us also know that when you go the wrong way, you need to make some sort of corrections to get on the right road. The results can be disastrous if we don't. Some roads will take you nowhere. Others will take you where you don't want to go. Still others are down-right dangerous if you continue on (like coming to a "bridge out" sign).
As a pastor, I encounter many stories of people who are headed down the wrong road in spiritual things. Like I was when I was on the wrong road, they think they are on the right road. If someone was to warn me while I was on the way home from Branson, I probably would have thought they were just being negative. I might have simply shaken off their warnings as "just another fool trying to show me to be a bigger fool." However, it is more likely that they have far more experience knowing just where my "wrong road" was headed - because they lived on that road! Spiritually speaking, however, the warnings of those who have left the wrong road ought to be heeded. They used to live on the wrong road, and have found the right road.
It's usually out of ignorance (not knowing any better) that people ignore the truth. After all, they've been taught to trust their feelings. Well, that day I was coming home from Branson was certainly a day when I felt pretty comfortable that I was doing well! How wrong I was. Our emotions can carry us to places we don't want to go. They certainly won't take us to heaven. Our opinions are meaningless when it comes to the truth. Our confidence and sincerity don't change the truth a single bit. Our interpretations of the signs along the way can, however, mean the difference between a safe arrival and disaster. The sign-maker has a message for the travelers, and wrong interpretations can be downright horrible! So how do you view the Bible? The way God, the sign-maker, intends, or do you take it in whatever way that makes you feel good, whatever way that fits your opinions, or whatever way makes sense to you? Or do you take it the way God intends for you to take it?
What you believe really DOES make the difference between Life and Death, Heaven and Hell. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, because God sees the whole road, and He made it.
